the silence of january

The improv quilt inspired by a snowstorm and the deep silence that follows. We had the biggest snowstorm in 25 years a few weeks ago. The storm closed down the region and kept me home for two days. On the third day, I ventured into the fresh deep snow to find the deep silence of January - of winter - of snow. This piece holds the layers of that experience. 

Materials: cotton fabrics, drop cloth, embroidery thread, pearl cotton, and collected pine needles. The pine needles were collected on a walk on the third day to bring a stronger sense of place into the work.
